I graduated from college without any debt thanks to the kindness of a family friend. His mother was one of my mother’s best friends. They went to high school together in Jamaica, they emigrated around the same time, and became neighbors in New York.
His mother is known to me as Aunt ‘Rin, even though I never met her, because she died of a heart attack in her 40s before I was born. To this day, I have never heard anyone remember her with anything other than fondness and affection. Arthurine (Jamaican names, y’all) was “a special woman” my father told me today.
After she died, my parents remained close to her family and when I was born, her family became my family too.
